This tile shows how much of the active sprint is still open right now, set against the same measure on recently closed sprints so a single number has meaning. A share well above the closed sprints' shares late in the sprint is the cue to revisit scope before unfinished work compounds.

What you can conclude

  • A share noticeably above the closed sprints' shares late in the sprint is a signal to plan a scope conversation.
  • A callout that the share is above each of the recently closed sprints is an early warning that unfinished scope is growing.
  • A share near or below the closed sprints' shares suggests the current sprint is sized realistically.

How this chart works

The sprint shown is the one Jira reports as active; when several sprints are active at once, the most recently created one is shown. Sprint state comes from Jira's own sprint start and close events, so a sprint whose start was never observed is not treated as active, and the tile shows no value rather than guess. Each issue is counted in the sprint it was most recently assigned to: an issue moved to a later sprint counts only there, and an issue removed from a sprint without joining another counts in none. For the active sprint the tile divides the issues not yet in a done status by all issues in the sprint, measured now. Up to six of the most recent closed sprints give the comparison, recency following the order in which Jira created them; for a closed sprint the same share is the work that was left in it and never moved on, measured today, not the state at that sprint's close.

The tile turns amber above 40 percent and red above 60 percent. Those bands are the same at every point of a sprint, so read a high share early in a sprint as normal and a high share late in it as the signal.
