It is one of the most actionable leading indicators available to an operations manager. Unlike backlog size, which is a lagging metric, this chart shows the direction of travel in real time.

What you can conclude

• A persistent gap where creation exceeds resolution means the backlog has been growing for that whole stretch; a reviewer could ask whether intake or capacity changed.
• Periods where resolution exceeds creation mean the backlog shrank over those weeks.
• Convergence of both lines over time means arrivals and resolutions are running at a similar pace.

How this chart works

Dual-line chart showing issues created vs. issues resolved over time. The gap between the two lines represents the net change in backlog size for the selected period.

Use the date filter to focus on a specific sprint, quarter, or release cycle. The chart works best when viewed over a period of at least 4 weeks.

The axis shows every calendar day in the selected range. A day with neither a creation nor a resolution is drawn as a break in both lines; a day with one but not the other shows the other as zero.

The day in progress is marked as still in progress and shown at its count so far. Because the day is not yet complete, it covers only what has been recorded up to now and can only grow as the day closes.
